The 29th edition of this world-renowned competition was held in San Sebastian as part of the International Cheese Festival. This makes for the third such recognition that the cheeses of Muntanyola have received in 2016.

Formatges Muntanyola, the cheeses which the AMPANS foundation makes at its dairy at the Urpina Farm (Sant Salvador de Guardiola), took home medals at the World Cheese Awards. Over 3,000 cheeses from around the world competed for the international prestige attained from securing an award as part of the San Sebastian International Cheese Festival.

A jury of over 250 experts bestowed the medals of gold, silver and bronze for the different categories. Muntanyola's blue goat's cheese took the gold medal, while the silver went to its blue buffalo milk cheese.
With the recognition gained from the World Cheese Awards, Muntanyola cheese notched up three awards in 2016. In March, its blue buffalo cheese won the Gold Medal at the Vic Lactium Fair, an award recognising the best traditionally-made cheese of Catalonia. The same cheese was considered the best artisan-made variety in its category at Spain's premier gourmet cheese event, Gourmet Quesos, held in Madrid in April.

At Formatges Muntanyola, we make traditional cheese from 4 milk varieties: goat, buffalo, cow and sheep, all at the Urpina Farm in Sant Salvador de Guardiola, where the AMPANS foundation runs an agricultural-livestock social project which provides employment and residential care for people with disabilities. Currently our dairy has 17 employees, 9 of whom have disabilities. Muntanyola cheeses can be found at various fine food shops and speciality boutiques, as well as AMPANS' own shops (Garden and Canonge).
